Colorado Vacation - part 2

Wednesday we headed to the top of Peak 8 at Breckenridge.  In the summer, this is home to Fun Park.
We rode the Gondola to the top of the mountain - spectacular views.

Lucas and I found our way through the Mineshaft Maze, but we certainly found lots of dead-ends, too!

SuperPutt Mini Golf

Possibly the best view of any mini golf course.

A split second that Hannah had her hat on.  The sun was strong and she did NOT want that thing on her head!

Gemstone Panning - Lucas found a lot of pretty stones, all which he got to keep.  He gave me a pink one.

His first-ever pony ride; he LOVED it.  He picked Cookie.

Dad and Lucas in the Mineshaft Maze - they were faster than Lucas and I.

As usual, a great traveler.

The gondola ride back down the mountain.

Riding over Cucumber Gulch Preserve.  A very fun day - we were all tired.

The next day we headed north into Rocky Mountain National Park.
We enjoyed a picnic lunch and all of the beautiful scenery.

The high, curvy roads.  The "posts" that you see along the road are for snow plows to use as a guide to stay on the road.

Mr. Map Reader.

We drove to the Alpine Alpine Visitor Center (elevation 11,796 feet).
From the visitor's center.

We had been telling Lucas for weeks that we would climb a mountain (yes, this is true - even though we didn't know where we were going on vacation).  Brent and I remembered climbing at Alpine when we were there in 2004.

Guess what?

They are renovating the path and it was closed!  Apparently, it has been closed for two years and they hope to open in 2012.  Bummer!

We made lots of pit-stops driving through Rocky Mountain National Park.  We spotted some animals, so Brent and Lucas got out to explore.  It was a whole herd of elk.

Hannah fell asleep for her normal afternoon nap, so we took turns getting out with Lucas to explore.

We planned to hike to the Alluvial Fan at Horseshoe Park.  Fortunately, Hannah woke up just a few minutes before arriving there.

Gorgeous.

Lawn Lake Dam was an earthen dam in Rocky Mountain National Park, United States that failed on July 15, 1982.  The sudden release of 220 million US gallons of water resulted in a flash flood that killed three people camping in the park.  The lake emptied in about a minute. When the waters reached the broader valley of Fall River at Horseshoe Park they spread out and slowed down, leaving behind a large alluvial fan of debris.

Happy hikers.

Mountain climber...

King of the mountain.

Dipping his toes.  It was cold!

Time to go home...

Wait, Mom wants "one more" photo.

We headed out of the Park and the terrain and scenery kept changing...

Estes Park, CO

Loveland, CO

We stopped overnight in Cheyenne, Wyoming for swimming pool fun.

We had a great travel day until we hit Omaha about 4:50PM.  There were signs telling us of an accident ahead.  By 5:15PM this was our view... while the speedometer ranged from 0-4mph.  Eight lanes of traffic trying to merge into two.  This slowed us down for about an hour, but our littlest travelers did awesome!

We stopped in Shelby, Iowa, at a gas station along the interstate.  This was not your typical gas station.
It's called The Corn Crib (rightfully so).

To get into the store, you walk through the grain bin.  To a certain three year old, this was so cool!
Definitely the cleanest grain bin I've ever been inside.

We made it all the way home safe and sound with great memories to share.  Can't wait until the next vacation!
