Flashback Friday ~ moving

Flashback Friday ~ five years ago
June 30, 2007

After two months of living with Brent's parents, we closed on our house.  But before I get to that story, let me tell you what led us to this little town...

In May 2006, I accepted a big promotion with ISU Extension.  I went from being a County Youth Coordinator for Wapello County to a Youth Field Specialist, covering four counties in southeast Iowa.   A lot of traveling, juggling evening and weekend events in four counties and supervising county staff.  Brent had been an Agronomist for Pioneer at Hedrick for four years.  We were happy in our careers.

On August 31, I was at meetings on ISU campus and Brent had been invited to meet with a district sales manager for Pioneer.  We planned on meeting up after we were both done and kicking off the tailgate season with family and friends at ISU's first football game of 2006.  Arriving in the tailgate lots of Jack Trice stadium, idle chit-chat between Brent and I turned into life changing decisions.  Brent had been offered the opportunity to move back to the community he grew up in and be a sales representative for Pioneer.  Thankfully, the decision did not need to be made quickly.  In fact, it was very much the opposite.  We had until February 1st of 2007 to give them an answer.  Five months!  It didn't take us five months to make the decision, but it was more than five months before we had everything in order to start over in a new, little community.  We had lived away from our families (in a town of 30,000 population) since the day after we got married - two hours from Brent's parents and almost three hours from my parents.  We had bought, gutted and remodeled our very first home, had successful careers, wonderful friends and very special neighbors.  Moving meant starting over for all of this.  Remember that promotion I had accepted?  I was so sad to leave my coworkers and 4-H families.  But at the same time, I knew from our first date that Brent dreamed of going home to farm.  While this job was not farming, it was close enough in business-related terms, as well as proximity, that Brent could be more involved in the family farm.  We also were very much wanting to have a baby and the thought of being closer to at least some of our family was very appealing.

I can't even begin to estimate the number of decisions we made in the months following that August 31st job offer.  There was a lot of uncertainty.  We didn't know when we would find a house, sell our old house, find me a job, buy land to build this business, and on and on... all while trying to keep the information that this was all happening on a low profile.

Our first house hunting visit was in February...in a snow storm.  It was unsuccessful and so were many more house hunting trips to follow.  In late March, Brent moved in with his parents; I was still working and living in Ottumwa.  I got a job transfer with ISU in late April and joined Brent with a couple of suitcases.  Our old house sold in May and we had no place to go with our stuff.  Brent called me at work one day and said he found a storage unit to put our stuff.  He needed me to write a deposit check to Rat Hole Rentals.  Umm, excuse me?!?!  It was actually a decent place - clean, dry, safe.  {The name was a play off the owner's last name, but I'm not sure it was good for marketing.}

Finally, at the end of May we found a house that would work for our growing family (I was pregnant with Lucas).  We closed on our house on June 30, 2007.

We were blessed to have such wonderful family and friends help us move and get settled in.  Things look A LOT different around here now, thanks to the famous hail storm of 2009 and two babies.  A fun flashback to see changes in only five years!  While we don't always understand it, God's timing is perfect.

In many, many ways we are very happy to be where we are.

Lucas says...

We got to visit with Great Grandma (Jean) Perry's siblings - Lois, Miles, Glen and wife, Judy - on a recent afternoon.  Great Grandma is conservative so this edition of Lucas says made all of us laugh... And made me hope she doesn't think we are a bunch of drunks!

Great Grandma:  Lucas, are you going to hunt with your Grandpa Steve someday?
Lucas:  Yes.  But not 'til I'm older.
{pause}
Lucas: And when we are done hunting we are going to go to Marv's and drink beer.

Insert laughing from everyone and Great Grandma light-heartedly telling Lucas he wasn't allowed to go hunting.

His response?  "I said not 'til I'm older!" he said defensively.

yummies

Recent yummies I've whipped up.

The chrysanthemum cupcakes were for a fundraiser.

I saw these several years ago while transporting and checking in 4-H exhibits at the Iowa State Fair.
I stored them away in my brain and knew I had to make them someday!  They were so pretty.

These double chocolate cupcakes were for the same fundraiser.

Mmmm!

Ashley's college graduation cake.

40th Birthday Cake for a football coach.  Shelly wanted cake for approximately 50.

Between the double layer cake and two dozen cupcakes she fed close to 60.
Poor Shelly didn't even get a bite!

Rose ombre cake for Molley's birthday.

We had three hours notice for a very impromptu 30th surprise birthday party for our friend Jen.
I offered to do a mini cake and came up with this very quickly.
A few more lumps & bumps than I prefer but I was working against the clock, heat, humidity and distractions.

Noah's first birthday cake.
It was fun to make the fondant decorations for this one.  I love the elephant and subdued colors.

visiting the Maddens

The first excursion of our summer was a visit to my friend and college roommate, Megan.  It is so much fun to catch up with friends who've known you for a long time and connect like you see them all of the time.  Megan and I were instant friends in college - farm kids, education majors, goal oriented (you know, like goals for graduating from college.  not all of our roommates had the same work ethic.) and we enjoyed socializing.  :)  Megan's husband, James, and Brent were fast friends when the boys entered the picture way back in college.
Their son, Cade, is a year and a half older than Lucas.  Ellie is in the middle and ironically, Maci and Hannah were born on the same day.  Maci was born just two hours after Hannah.
Maci and Hannah at five weeks old.
Maci and Hannah at 17 months.
P.S. This was not an easy picture to take!

Lucas and Cade are very similar.
- Sweet, caring boys
- First born with baby sister(s)
- Love for the farm
- Blondies
- Happy smiles and adorable dimples

They were shy for about 90 seconds and then they hit the ground running.
And driving.

It was fun for Megan and I to catch up and great to see the kids interact and play.

Father's Day

A couple of girlfriends and I went to a pottery store last month and made some special gifts for our husbands for Father's Day. I had the idea for Brent's gift, but needed Kim's artistic talent.

Personalized grilling platter.

I saw this cute idea on Pinterest so I made my own version for us to use.
I just need to remember to use it for the next ten years or so!

It was a fun weekend.  Brent golfed with Brad, Brian and his dad.  We spent the evening with family and Lucas and Hannah played with cousin Cameron, too.  Hannah took a special liking to Tim.

And the best toy was the tub that all the toys had been stored in.

"Up high" with Uncle Brian.

Smooshed cheeks and smiles.

~rockin' it old school~

In some recent cleaning, Brent's high school yearbooks were uncovered.  Boy, did I have fun browsing the pages!  I also saw pictures of his high school friends and identified lots of locals whom I've come to know in recent years.
[For those of you reading this that just realized I may have seen some sweet photos of you from the 90s - no fear, I won't be purposefully posting your photos, or identifying you. {you owe me} ]

Brent was active in musicals and Cabaret, too.
He still has a beautiful musical gift!

This award goes to an outstanding citizen athlete.

Hopefully Brent doesn't get embarrased that I posted these photos... It's so easy for me to share stories and photos of my own memories.  These pictures represent some good memories for Brent.
