::health alert::

Germs ahead!!

In the last few days we've had pink eye, double ear infection, sore throats, coughs, fevers, runny noses... and it isn't over yet.  This house has been infected and NONE of us like it.  At all.  Feeling yucky means not sleeping well for little ones and big ones who want more sleep.  NONE of us like that combination, either.

Flashback Friday

June 11, 2008

After six very long and painful months, Brent had back surgery.  He hurt is back the first week of January 2008... Lucas was just three weeks old.  Brent spent a lot of time lying on the floor those months because that was the only thing that lessened the pain (lessened, not relieved).

This was also the first spring of his new job.  The job he needed to lift and throw bags of seed.  The job he needed to climb on and off a forklift.

He tried physical therapy for weeks, it helped some.  He tried steroid shots to help the pain, they didn't work at all.  The pain killers helped.  Tthinking back, he probably shouldn't have been operating some of the equipment he was!

By April, it was decided that back surgery would be the best option.  Of course, nothing is a guarantee and he could still have pain.  But at the time, it was the best hope he had to feel better.  Because of the nature of the seed business, he couldn't have the surgery until spring planting was done.  It was scheduled for June 11.

The Friday night before his surgery, Brent was in excruciating pain.  I called his parents and asked them to come watch Lucas because I was prepared to take Brent to the emergency room.  After some time on the phone with the First Nurse, it was decided not to go to the ER.  They wouldn't do an emergency surgery and we already knew that the steroid shots weren't working for him so we might as well stay home.  Just five days until surgery.

I remember driving to the hospital the morning of surgery... we left home about 6AM.  We had our first Tahoe then - I was driving and Brent was in the passenger seat.  We only made it about eight blocks before Brent couldn't handle the car ride.  I pulled over and opened the lift gate - Brent climbed in the back of the Tahoe so he could lie down for the 60 mile trip.

The surgery took longer than expected.  After speaking with Dr. Kaspar, he said it would be a little while before he was out of recovery and into a room.  Shortly after that, a nurse came to get me because while still drugged up in the recovery room, Brent insisted to the nurse that I would be worried and should be allowed to see him.  {that makes me smile even thinking back}  Later that evening, Brent was up and walking.  I couldn't believe it.  He said he could tell a difference as soon as the drugs wore off: it was a success!

Besides the pain factor, surgery was just in time because two weeks after surgery, Lucas started crawling!

Family Fest

Several organizations in our community hosted an event for families a few weeks ago. The purpose was to simply have a fun, free event for families. I had some responsibilities for the event through work, so Lucas and I were able to check the event out. Lucas loved all of the hands-on activities.  It was a great way to spend a cold, rainy Saturday!

...it is rare that Brent and I have a {good} picture of just the two of us.
A good day to post this - our 8th wedding anniversary!

always, sometimes, never

I saw this on a blog I follow and thought it would be fun to play along.  I'm supposed to tag others, so I tag everyone who is reading.  Feel free to join in and make sure you leave me the link in the comments below so I can come check it out =)

I always...
…am thankful for my family.
…am happy when Lucas wants to snuggle.
…am happy when Hannah giggles.
…cheer for the Cyclones!
…love a massage.
…worry too much about things I can't control.
…want instant gratification.right.now.
…have a caffeinated beverage once a day.
…love to read.
…wish we were living in the country.
…make time to blog.

I sometimes...
…have mom guilt.
…make our bed.
…watch too much t.v.
…remember to take my vitamins.
…wish I was more disciplined.
…dream of being a stay at home mom.
…spend too much time on the computer.

I never...
…feel unloved.
…say "no" to sleeping in.
…get tired of Matthew West’s “Safe and Sound."
…joined facebook.
…get tired of laughing.
…say no to a Reeces Peanut Butter cup (or five).
…turned down the opportunity to eat out.
…I never forget to pray.

::farm feet::

You know what farm feet are, right?  When you have no fear of walking without shoes... A phenomenon in kids.

I can remember walking our gravel driveway to get the mail.

Climbing a wire fence to chase a ball.

Running through grass, never once slowing down to see what I might be running through {thistles}.

Doing the hot-hot concrete dance to avoid scorching the bottoms of my feet on the sidewalk.  A hot stone and mud pedicure before I even knew what such a thing was!

Brent took this picture on his phone and texted it to me on Sunday. Lucas had been helping him water trees and instead of ruining his boots in the mud, he shed them.

I later told Brent that Lucas was developing farm feet. Then I learned something new about my husband. He never had farm feet. Nope. He said walking on gravel hurt. This made me giggle. My big, strong husband has delicate feet.

By the looks of things, Lucas will have farm feet this summer.
